QSI 500 Series Family
A defining feature of the 500 Series is the flexible design that permits
three progressively configured body styles with a minimal impact on overall
size. The three body configurations, Slim, Medium, and Full, are compared in
the image above.
The Slim
body is the thinnest version
and can be used with CCDs incorporating an electronic shutter. The
Medium body provides addition space for an internal mechanical shutter. The Full body
allows the installation of both the shutter and the five position filter wheel.

Slim Internal Color Filter Wheel
The 500 Series internal color filter wheel accepts up to 5 interchangeable
1.25" filters. Shown above is the standard LRGB color filter set in a 516ws
camera. The filter wheel only adds 1/2" to the camera depth and backfocus.

500 Series Rear - Forced Air Cooling
The heatsink cooling fins are an integral part of the camera body
and the configurable, intelligent cooling fans are recessed into the
surface. This keeps the entire cooling system within the smooth envelope of
the camera and eliminates protruding structures that can tangle cables or
catch on the camera's surroundings.

QSI 540ws Filter Wheel
Because the internal color filter wheel is positioned very close to the focal plane in QSI 500 Series cameras, the 21.4mm diagonal Kodak KAI-04022 sensor in the QSI 540ws experiences no optical vignetting through standard 1¼" filters, even with fast optical systems down below f/4.5. Even below f/4 the very small amount of light drop-off in the extreme corners of the large 2K x 2K sensor is almost undetectable and easily corrected with routine flat field calibration.

QSI 540 KAI-04022 Sensor
The QSI 540 camera employs a Kodak KAI-04022 4.2 megapixel interline transfer CCD image sensor. The large, 21.4mm diagonal sensor has a photoactive array of 2048W x 2048H pixels. Low dark current and high pixel charge capacity result in a dynamic range exceeding 74db. The sensor employs a vertical overflow drain that provides both antiblooming protection and a fast electronic shutter. Micro lenses cover the surface of the CCD to focus the light into each pixel to increase optical response. The image above shows how a CCD can act like a diffraction grate to separate white light into a spectrum of colors.

QSI 500 Series WSG w/ Integrated Guider Port
The WSG is an innovative new addition to the QSI 500 Series family of cooled CCD cameras. The WSG model has an internal mechanical shutter and filter wheel like the 500 Series "ws" models, plus it adds an Integrated Guider Port (IGP). The red arrows in the image above show light entering the front of the camera with the light for the guide camera being picked off from in front of the filters.

The 500 Series WSG was selected by Sky & Telescope Magazine as a "Hot Product for 2009".
The WSG model has an internal mechanical shutter and filter wheel like the 500 Series "ws" models, plus it adds an Integrated Guider Port (IGP). The QSI 500 Series QSG solves a number of the problems with other guiding solutions by integrating a Guider Port directly into the camera body with the pick-off prism positioned in front of the integrated color filter wheel – right where it belongs.

QSI 583 KAF-8300 Sensor
The QSI 583 camera employs an 8.3mp Kodak KAF-8300 megapixel full frame CCD image sensor. The large, 22.5mm diagonal sensor has a photoactive array of 3326W x 2504H pixels. It is available in monochrome or single-shot color versions. Low noise yields a high dynamic range exceeding 70db. The sensor employs a lateral overflow drain that provides anti-blooming protection. Micro lenses cover the surface of the CCD focusing the light onto the photosensitive area of each pixel providing peak Quantum Efficiency of 60%.
